west coast totem detail


west coast totem detail, originally uploaded by gawdessness.

Found this not far from home, on the museum grounds.

A totem pole that had been carved and raised over 25 years ago.

It is a deeply beautiful piece and this is but a part of it.

Hope to spend more time there again.

    i read boubou's comment and then looked at the photo again, and it made me realize just how accurate the carvers were when they chose the exact piece of wood and location on the wood for carving this face. every line of grain aligns correctly. it's gorgeous! and i love the deep age and moisture cracks in the wood, too. always do.

    you have done just justice to the texture...this reminds me of the totem pole we spotted on a grey misty day close to Pike Market in Seattle...the lack of light spoiled all my plans of getting a decent image of it :(((
