hobbies and passions
perhaps the beginning of a series?
whatever...quality time was spent today adding to my yarn stash
most of which is kept in this armoire in our living room
and the rest in an old, oak library card catalogue in the dining room

the incomplete zoo
"No! You can't take a picture of it yet! The zoo is INCOMPLETE!"
"Okay I guess you can, just remember IT IS INCOMPLETE!"
It is an odd and a somewhat nostalgic perspective to being a big person and looking down upon a small person who is in turn looking down at smaller (plastic) people and animals

cold night at the fort
a robbie burns celebration was held out at the historical interpretive centre
this was the first thing I saw when I got out of the car

It's easy to love you
He keeps tripping and falling over the smaller dogs
and today he got so cold he was barking to be let in
and needed blankets and children to warm him from shivering
and he hadn't been out all that long
and love shines from his dark, triangle eyes
as he reaches up to give a kiss of thanks

fresh frozen
I love line hung laundry
the smells and textures
and even the sound of it
flapping in the breeze
but I have never been able to warm up to
slogging through the snow
mittened hands clumsily trying to
clip clothespins around line and stiffening fabric
to allow them to solidify in the windchill of -25 Celsius
obviously, there are braver and truer souls out there, literally,
than I...

sticky fingers
ah Nanaimo bars!
Canadian delicacy?
we like to think so
and frankly, I don't really care
what, who or where
or how they come
as long as I get some

the joy of skating on a pond
bright sky
warm weather
an afternoon spent outside in the park
my nine year old's skates
flashing silver blades

like a summer day with snow (iphone)
stopped for a moment near the end of my run today to snap this -
it was so warm I ended up peeling off most of the layers of clothing I had piled on
and I saw at least a couple of other runners in their shorts
and I was jealous!

snow spray
the temperature shot straight up today
perfect for sledding in the sun
wearing snowpants and a sweater
my son sends up showers of snow

lucky stars
thankful that for now anyway
my big dog who was glazed eyed and and drooling with pain yesterday
is much more his happy self today
ears perked up and bushy tail wagging

twilight
I love my backyard most of the time
but on snowy, winter nights
when the sky seems as white as the ground
it is most magical
and it makes me think of my lovely, furry
oldest dog
who loves the cold and snow as much as I do
he had a bad day today
his back end just doesn't work the way it used to
and today he tripped over a smaller dog
and fell and was in so much pain
he looked into my eyes and I could see him ask me
to make it better
a trip to our vet and a lot of painkillers later and he seems
to be okay
but okay isn't good enough
so we are waiting to see what happens
because he can no longer do stairs
and it confuses and worries him
to not sleep where we are
as he has done for the last five years
of his life with us
(we had to carry him down in a blanket sling this morning)
my husband and I have moved into
the guest bedroom on the main floor
you know the kind...
filled with books and boxes and bits and pieces of life that you might need enough not to get rid of
and almost incidentally - a bed for the rare and forgiving visitor
and it is okay
because there are big, trusting, brown eyes looking up at me
and the smile is almost back on his malamute mouth

bedside light
I love a quote from Calvin and Hobbes -
"the days are just packed!"
and with our busy and full house
they really are
tonight I pause before head hits the pillow
to take this shot
post it and then
snap!

why an elephant?
on our oldest daughter's thirteenth birthday
we gave her a chain with a gold dragon pendant on it
because she is tough, and fiery like one and beautiful and magical
today our youngest son turned thirteen and received a golden elephant to mark his passage into teenagehood
because elephants have long been associated with never forgetting and strong family bonds
and they are rare and very precious
just like our boy

brick art
can't really take much credit for this shot
I did point the camera and push the button
beautifully crafted from lego blocks by the artist

bicycle icicle
hill training means finding a relatively steep slope of 400 - 500 metres and running up and down it a bunch of times - many people don't like it, but I kind of do - it isn't easy but it isn't boring either
and the end is always in sight
that I am a morning person doesn't hurt either and
especially with good friends to meet up with
this bike rising out of a snow drift caught my eye outside of the fitness centre that is our meeting place

commuter train glory
this morning it was -30 celsius again
and we were off in pursuit of farmer's market carrots
when the sight of the sun pouring through the ice fog and framed by the bridges caused us to take a brief detour.

-30 Celsius ouside
means fluffy blankets inside
dragged along by children of all ages
to nest in and under
but they must be sharp eyed and on their guard
for there are hairy interlopers always watching and plotting
and ready to move in and lay claim

broken bird under the tree
when we were taking down the tree today
a little silvered glass bird tumbled to the floor
and shattered
i don't know how old it was,
one of a few leftover from my husband's childhood
but I would rather take them out every Christmas and
try and be careful
and see them
and hear the kids ooh over them
and that smile on his face
rather than leave them in yellowing tissue paper
in a box
in the basement

Photo Quotes
When I ask to photograph someone, it is because I love the way they look and I think I make that clear. I'm paying them a tremendous compliment. What I'm saying is, I want to take you home with me and look at you for the rest of my life. - Amy Arbus
