when we were taking down the tree today
a little silvered glass bird tumbled to the floor
and shattered
i don't know how old it was,
one of a few leftover from my husband's childhood
but I would rather take them out every Christmas and
try and be careful
and see them
and hear the kids ooh over them
and that smile on his face
rather than leave them in yellowing tissue paper
in a box
in the basement

When I ask to photograph someone, it is because I love the way they look and I think I make that clear. I'm paying them a tremendous compliment. What I'm saying is, I want to take you home with me and look at you for the rest of my life. - Amy Arbus

I think you're right. It's heartbreaking to see something like that break but what is the point if it sits in a box and no-one ever gets to enjoy it's beauty.
Oh, dear.
I agree, though. Better to take the chance and enjoy it, than have it sitting in a box.
